11 Aug 2009While having an early morning coffee break in Boracay’s Cafe del Sol, I got an email invite from Oman Santiago to visit their newly opened restaurant at SM Mall of Asia. It took me almost a month before I finally got the chance to visit the place.. I was not actually that busy in the past couple of weeks but I guess Im just waiting for fellow foodies whom I can tag along in the restaurant visit.
Good thing fellow food bloggers got their invites too so we decided to visit the restaurant in group. Together with Nina, Juned, Ryan, Magnetic-rose, Karla and Sha, we visited the restaurant to tryout their food offerings.
The restaurant is perfectly located in front of San Miguel by the Bay right beside The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. The area is not too crowded and the restaurant also offers alfresco dining. The restaurants interior has a simple design but the color orange and green combination for me was elegant and inviting.. The view of the Manila Bay plus the less crowded location made the place so relaxing.
While waiting for the rest, Oman suggested that I try their Kamias-Lychee Shake while waiting for the rest. It was actually a good mixture, the sweetness of lychee mixed well with kamias which makes it a truly refreshing beverage.
When we were finally complete, they started to serve food starting with their best selling Fruity Wonton Salad – It was a good appetizer specially for vegetarians. The salad has tiny crisp fried berry and cheese filled wontons and dried cranberries on a bed of mix greens tossed with raspberry vinaigrette.
Another interesting appetizer was the Chili Crusted Tofu, At first, I thought it was bread crumbs but I was amazed when I learned that it was fried crusted tofu cubes. I like the cripy chili tofu specially when its dipped with sweet chili sauce.
The crispy tofu was followed by another interesting appetizer – the Fried Lasagna Rolls. Unlike your usual lasagna, their version looks like a bite size lumpiang shanghai but wait till you taste it, This deep fried lasagna rolls is crispy in the outside and its filled with cheese, ground beef and other spices.. truly a must try!
For seafood lovers, I would recommend you to try their Crisp Fried Whitebait. At first look, I thought it was Taal’s famous Tawilis but Oman explained that it was Whitebait – Its a larger version of our favorite “Dilis”, seasoned and fried with Asian tartar, spicy mango aioli and soy vinegar. This seafood specialty can be a perfect side dish, healthy appetizer or even pulutan.

Fish Fillet in Light Soy Sauce
If you dont like eggplants then trying out their Rolled Eggplant crisp will definitely change your mind. Believe me, It doesnt taste like your usual eggplant dish. The unique taste of herbed cheese and marinara sauce made this Eggplant dish on top of my list.

Carolina Barbequed Country Style Pork
If you are avoiding red meat on your diet, try their Beer battered fish fillets – its golden fried and it comes with home-made tartar sauce and served with French fries. If you are avoiding fried food, try their Pan seared fish fillet with perfect mix of potato and green vegetables sauted in light soy sauce.
For the main course, Pinoy’s will surely love Carolina Barbecued Country Style Pork – Its grilled marinated pork basted with sweet Carolina BBQ sauce served with fresh salad on the side. If you like Chicken barbeque then try their “Asian Sytle Barbequed Chicken – They use selected skinless chicken marinated in their sweet and spicy barbeque sauce and served with garden salad and fragrant rice.
After a huge set of appetizers and main course, its time to indulge in their set of sinfully sweet concoction of mango, chocolate and pudding based desserts. Chocoloate lovers will surely enjoy their Tiramisu, make sure to order this if you have sombebody to share with coz the servings are really huge.
Frozen Mango Tango is equally sinfull but at least the sweet mango balls has enough fiber which which can aid on better digestion (yeah im just trying to justify it haha) but seriously I really love the frozen layers of mangoes and cream with toasted cashew nuts and tangy mango sauce.
White Chocolate Bread Pudding is definitely my favorite dessert in this restaurant. This orgasmic dessert has a melted white chocolate flavored pudding served with whiskey sauce and vanilla ice cream on top.
I’ve been to a lot of food tasting invitations this year and I think Unit 8 Cafe’s food offerings is the most impressive. The location is good, they have the friendliest staff, food is flavorgasmic and best of all their food is fairly priced considering its huge servings.
Unit 8 Café had its official launch last June 21, 2009. The restaurant offers free wifi access and is open daily from 10 am – 10pm. The restaurants impressive menu was prepared by Chef Teresa Hembrador. An experienced Chef who practiced her skills in Sydney, Singapore, Tokyo and Hongkong.
